Dozens of men and women are involved in aspects of worship ministry, from leading music and providing audio/video support, to ushering and putting the coffee on.
It takes an army of adult volunteers to guide our AWANA, children's Sunday School, and nursery/toddler care ministries. All volunteers receive training and voluntarily submit to a background check to help create the safest environment for our precious little ones.
Unlike many church youth programs, New Life prefers not to hire a pastor specifically to train youth. Instead, we are a parent-led program, with dads providing the primary teaching, and both dads and moms leading discussion groups. Currently, three of our four pastors have children in youth group and are involved as dad-leaders. Youth Group (grades 7-12) meets Wednesday nights from 6:30-8 for worship, teaching, and fun. New Life teens are encouraged to bring their friends.
Men’s Ministry (also known as “Ironmen”) has a various activities throughout the year to help equip men, strengthen marriages and encourage healthy parenting. In addition, Ironmen provides opportunities for accountability, service and fun, including an annual men’s retreat.
Women’s Ministry offers a variety of events throughout the year for the purpose of fun, fellowship and personal growth. Watch the bulletin for events such as craft days, Moms mornings, women’s times and the always popular annual retreat! Women are encouraged to participate in Barnabas Groups. If you would like to join one, please contact Raylene Grose for help in finding a group. For anytime encouragement and fellowship, a ladies online blog and discussion group can be found at www.newlifecrladies.wordpress.com.
Even though God is good, life can sometimes be a challenge. Past experiences can keep us from experiencing the joy and peace that God wants his children to know. Our Renew Ministry, led by Pastor Kurt Jurgensmeier, is designed to help hurting people heal. Since New Life is a demographically youthful church, we're blessed by waves of weddings. Most couples voluntarily complete pre-marital counseling, led by Pastor Brian Hagerman.
New Life supports missions work in several places around the world. Our closest partnerships are with pastors and churches in Monterrey, Mexico, and India. For the past six years, we have partnered with Kids Against Hunger to pack and send more than 100,000 meals to undernourished children in Haiti. During the summer months, we have both hosted and travelled to other cities, to participate in Mission to the City, a week-long, family-oriented mission to serve families in need.
College Campus Ministry
It seems that our culture today has low expectations of college-aged adults — just stay out of trouble and become “productive members” of society. Thank God that He equips these young men and women to do so much more for His sake!
- New Life started college campus outreach in 2005 with a small group, called The Core, at Mt. Mercy University.
- In 2009, we expanded The Core to the campus of Kirkwood Community College. The Core Bible study at Kirkwood meets at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- New Life has financially assisted several students that desire to work part-time in campus ministry at Kirkwood and Mt. Mercy.
- Each December, many Core students attend the Great Commission Faithwalkers Conference in Des Moines, IA (as do a number of New Life families). The conference seeks to provide young men and women a venue to learn from older men and women who have “fought the good fight.”
- For more information about The Core, including a calendar of upcoming activities, visit www.thecorecr.com.
Youth for Christ
New Life strongly supports the ministry of the Heartland Youth for Christ chapter. It's Executive Director, Pastor Mark Moyer, attends New Life, and several of our members are past and present members of the YFC Board of Directors. In addition, several of our recent high school graduates are currently on staff with YFC.
The Cedar Rapids area is blessed with perhaps the strongest network of homeschool support groups in the entire country. A significant number of New Life families homeschool their kids, and we encourage families to consider homeschooling as an excellent option for both educational excellence and character development. If you homeschool, or have an interest in learning more about homeschooling, you'll find New Life's moms to be an outstanding resource.
